Get a Better Night's Sleep ~ Naturally

The sleep cycles of the body are powerfully impacted by what lifestyle, dietary practices and stressful are present in our lives. While we could simply pop a sleeping pill, forcing the body unnaturally into a sleep cycle, this does not address the root cause of the sleep cycle disturbance.

Sleep disturbance or the inability to fall asleep may be impacted by a variety of personal circumstances. Each of us is vastly different so it is important to listen to your own body, look at your own total life picture and continue to focus on bringing the entire body back into balance, to address the root cause of sleep disturbance.

Things to look at...

1. Is your life overly stressed? We can not always control external stress, however we can control how our internal body responds to that stress. Find outlets for stress and make time to regain your center and balance. This may be found by getting up from your desk periodically throughout the day and taking a walk outdoors, it may be found in scheduling a time during the week for a yoga class or some much needed down time (a comfy couch and movies anyone??), or it may be found in beginning a consistent exercise routine. Deep breathing is also very important, so if you don't have a meditative practice in place, take a few minutes each day to relax and take some deep breaths.

2. Pay attention to external cues. At the end of the day give yourself a "unwind" period of time. Loud televisions, busy nighttime schedules, lots of lights and noise in the hours before bed wrongly communicate to the body that it it time to party and not that it is time to sleep. Turn off electronics, turn down lights, get some fresh air. Allow your body the time it needs to unwind from a busy day and get into the nighttime cycle.

3. Herbal Helpers. Lavender inhaled, used in an herbal diffuser or lightly sprinkled on bedtime clothing and blankets will induce feelings of calm and relax. Drinking chamomile or Valerian root tea in the hours leading up to bed will also help to calm down the internal environment and induce feelings of calm. Using herbs medicinally for persistent sleep cycle disturbance is an option, but should be integrated into a bigger, holistic approach to restoring the body's natural rhythms.

4. Exercise. Running around like a chicken with your head cut off may seem like exercise, but its not. Consistent cardiovascular and strength training exercise is a vital element in a healthy life. Implementing a consistent exercise routine that fits your style, personality and body make up, helps to regulate all types of internal body rhythms, including your sleep cycle. Taking a walk in the morning and in the evening also helps to balance internal rhythms.

5. How are you eating? Does your diet include alot of stimulants such as refined and processed foods, sweets, caffeine and foods with lots of additives? All of these send your body unbalanced and unnatural signals, leading to a variety of internal unbalances. They have a profound impact on the body's natural internal rhythms as well, including your sleep cycles. If you are tired during the day but forcing your body unnaturally awake with stimulants and caffeine, it becomes confused and is constantly out of balance. Eating lots of fresh, local, organic foods gives your body what it needs to maintain balanced, natural internal body rhythms. Cut out the junk, add in the fresh and soon you will not only feel better while you are awake you will sleep much better.
